October 17, 2014 Period 3 Ms. Chiavetta Hunter - Gatherers To define hunter-gatherers, it is necessary to understand that they were people who hunted animals and gathered plants, nuts, seeds, and fruits. One characteristic of hunter-gatherers is their use of fire. Social scientists believe Homo Sapiens learned how to create fire. They used it to cook their food, such as animals that they hunted. Another characteristic of hunter-gatherers is their use of language. Social scientists hypothesize hunter-gatherers used languages to make hunting easier and they used it to distribute food. They also used it to create relationships between themselves. Finally, hunter-gatherers are characterized by their use of tools. Social scientists predict that they used tools to hunt animals. They may have used flint knives, spears, axes. etc. In conclusion, understanding hunter-gatherer societies allows us to know that hunter-gatherers were people who hunted animals and gathered food to eat in order to survive. |
